Five nautical gifts you can purchase from a chandler

Chandlers are the hardware stores of the boating world, selling thousands of yachting and marine products from the smallest nuts and bolts to entire navigation systems. Even in the superyacht industry, crew can find portside chandleries extremely valuable for last minute maintenance work and repairs.

But many chandlers also cater to the lighter side of boating, and offer some great gifts for the yachtsman or the family. Here’s just five of some of the best nautical gifts we’ve found from chandleries online.

Nauticalia port and starboard socks

Socks get a bad reputation as a gift — but even when we receive socks from our family as a gift, we at least think ‘one less pair for me to buy.’ Make it a pair of socks they’ll LOVE to get, with these port and starboard-themed fluffy socks. Alternatively, if socks aren’t your thing, try these embroidered nautical beanies.

Patterned hip flask

Available from Marine Store

Know a boater who likes a tipple? This nautical themed hip flask is covered in a navy leatherette with silver pattern, giving it a clean and elegant appearance. It even comes with its own small silver funnel, to help the flask be filled.

Anchor corkscrew

Available from Marine Superstore

Everyone needs a reliable drink opener, and when one tool can open capped and corked bottles, even better. Made from solid brass castings with a stainless steel corkscrew thread, this anchor-styled drinks tool is a must have for any party hero.

Ship’s-wheel nut cracker

Available from Marine Superstore

Even if it didn’t have the ship’s wheel styling, this product would still be genius. Crack a nut by placing it in the vice, and turn the wheel until the shell cracks! This also prevents damaging the kernel (the nut inside), which isn’t always possible with plier-style nut crackers.

Not only that, but this product’s beautiful design makes it more than suitable for countertop display, too.

Naval rum measure

Available from Nauticalia

The Royal Naval rum was measured in half-gill tots and diluted various ways, often into a two-gill (half-pint) measure. These measures are made in the time-honoured way: from skilfully hand-beaten brass, copper-plated, polished, and lined with silver to neutralise taste. The base is stamped with the prestigious HMS logo.
