ASK THE EXPERT: ENTERTAINMENT & AV SYSTEMS

What are the latest trends when considering smart technology in the marine superyacht sector?

As we become increasingly familiar with high-definition TV and video streaming, clients are demanding distribution systems that can deliver increased video resolutions of 4K or even 8K and beyond. While these advances undoubtedly benefit the end user, they put increasing demand on the infrastructure behind the scenes, which needs to be capable of delivering higher volumes of data.

Fibre optic cabling is becoming standard infrastructure, allowing for excellent opportunities when designing audio-visual schemes from scratch or retrofitting vessels. Fibre optic cabling can provide 100 times the bandwidth of traditional copper cables over a far greater distance. This helps create an unobtrusive design layout while benefiting from electromagnetic interference immunity and high electrical resistance. This is a great bonus in noisy marine environments allowing installation close to power cables or electrical devices.

How do you support yacht engineers and help ensure connectivity and ease of use both onshore and offshore?

It is vital from the design stage up that we design systems with reliability and ease of use in mind. By using products that offer not only the latest technology but have also been proved fit for the marine environment, we can ensure a reliable installation. By designing and installing a robust, future-proofed infrastructure we can help ensure the best system performance demanded by the most discerning clientele.

When committing to a design, we ensure that we install equipment taking into account support issues that may be encountered. How do we do this? By installing central hardware in purpose-built AV equipment racks, with power conditioning and protection, heat dissipation and future serviceability in mind. As with all technology sometimes things do go wrong, so we provide 24/7 remote support, along with periodic system maintenance so that you do not get stuck with charter guests or owners frustrated by poor system performance.

What would you say to owners and ETOs frustrated by underperforming AV systems?

Unfortunately, we often come across yachts with underperforming, overcomplicated systems where owners wish to remove poor control systems. Often though we find that the real issue lies not with the control system but with poor programming. This often serves to overcomplicate processes and ultimately does not fulfil the needs of the end user. We overcome this by always emphasising ease of use and as a result, have managed to turn around many systems to the delight of both owners and crew.

How well do audio systems really perform at sea?

We are finding that today’s superyacht owners and charter guests wish to have high-quality audio systems across all yacht locations. To meet this requirement we have in-house sound engineers experienced at specifying and installing high quality, marine specific speakers and subwoofers. We then calibrate the systems to ensure they sound flawless wherever on board and at any given sound level.
