ASK THE EXPERT: Lifts & Elevators

Why should you consider having a lift on board a superyacht?

It all depends on the size of the yacht of course, but a so-called dumbwaiter or galley lift on a superyacht is indispensable. Imagine having guests over and the crew is preparing a lovely dinner in the galley, you do not want the crew to have to walk with plates of hot food through the ship any more than necessary. Not only is the food likely to be cold once it reaches the table, but there is also a chance of spilling the food. Transport with a dumbwaiter also diminishes unwanted food odours in the ship.

An additional crew or owner’s lift obviously gives you the same benefits as a lift in a building, however in superyacht design the lift is not only a means of transport but also a real eye catcher. Several HML lifts have become part of true artworks in the past years, with stunning results.

You have a minimum amount of space on board, what are the possibilities?

The lack of space is one of the things that separates lifts on land with lifts on board yachts. Throughout the years HML has developed several technical solutions to deal with this lack of space, for example we found a way to integrate the hydraulic power unit into the lift shaft. Consequently a much smaller machine room is needed. We are confident to say we always find room for a lift on board a yacht, whether you want to showcase the lift or want to hide it from your view, we will find the optimal solution. The sooner we are involved in the design process, the better.

Once we have chosen a lift, what is required in regards to the maintenance?

We always emphasize the importance of maintenance of the lift on board a yacht. Proper maintenance keeps the lift running smoothly and prevents the need for repairs. Once HML installs a lift, we always provide a recommended spare part list and a maintenance manual. With this manual the day-to-day maintenance and cleaning of the lift can be done by crew members. In addition an annual visit by a certified service engineer is recommended, ensuring the wear and tear of the lift can be monitored and certain parts can be replaced in time. HML provides lift service all over the world, not only for lifts of our own making, but also for lifts of other brands.
