ASK THE EXPERT: Refit & Repair

How was 2G Marine established?

2G Marine is an Istanbul based technical management and survey company focused on yachting. We create a ‘’scientific approach to yachting’’. We bring our expertise from Navy shipbuilding, yachting operations and engineering projects. 2G Marine was founded with this heritage.

What services does the company focus on?

New construction and refit project management, repair planning and monitoring, contracts and specification/configuration writing and consulting, acceptance and milestone surveys, pre-delivery inspections, and expert witnessing. All in consultation with the owner.

What are the key points that can bring a good result in a refit and repair process?

All parties in this process, for example: shipyard project manager, captain, owner etc. should start the process with an common goal: delivering the perfect yacht at the end of the refit process. Any refit activity without having the result foreseen or expectations defined clearly will end with a dissatisfied client. As a principal of our business, we start the refit project management with an interview with the captain/owner and the designer, to fully understand and manage the expectations at the end of the process.

What do you see in the future for the refit industry?

The general trends of the global economy have a direct effect on our industry, and in the long term there will be some additional regulations about fossil fuel use and other environmental issues. All these changes will force the yachting industry into a conversion and the future will be bright for the ones who can create additional value by spending less sources. At 2G Marine we closely follow the trends to create the most efficient method for refit planning and refit management.

How do you add value to the refit project as 2G Marine? What will change in a project when the owner works with you?

Our motto is: ‘’Scientific approach to yachting’’ and we believe that comfort and pleasure is strongly bounded with engineering. Engineering is simply caring for problems. At 2G Marine we take care of every detail to prevent the owner and the captain from worrying. When a yacht owner works with us they will experience a smooth and well-managed project flow with no “no can do’s”, long meetings, change orders or extra payments.

How do you define the role of refit project manager?

The refit project manager is the one to first oversee any potential problems, consult both shipyard and owner and take precautions to deter any problems before they happen. Refit is predominately about project management, with the shipyard on one side and the yacht owner on the other. That is why 2G Marine always verify contracts, write a responsibility matrix, double check technical specifications and other documents so that all parties involved in the refit have a clear understanding of the project.

The key to a successful refit is communication and accountability, allowing the project to stay on schedule and within budget.
