Australia’s superyacht industry is growing, and growing fast; from Sydney to Brisbane, more and more superyachts are choosing Australia as their next cruising or berthing destination to allow its guests to enjoy Australia’s renowned fun-in-the-sun lifestyle.

With its popularity starting to soar, many crew are looking to land their next, or even their first, crew position aboard a yacht in Australia, and crew houses and other temporary accommodation solutions are popping up to assist crew in their search. We’ve put together a list of popular spots for crew in Australia that you may want to get in touch with to assist finding yacht work down-under.

Crew houses in Sydney

Sunset over Sydney Harbour

Youth Hostel Association (YHA), Sydney Harbour

YHA has hostels all over the country, primarily intended for backpackers and travellers. However, they make great places to set up base for a couple of weeks whilst you prep and secure a position.

You typically can have up to two weeks in a hostel, but YHA allow extended stays at the manager’s discretion. It’s worth giving them a call and explaining what you need. There are also several locations all over Sydney, and indeed the rest of Australia, which can help you to be more flexible.

Crew houses in Queensland

Cairns, Queensland Australia

Crew Pacific

Named Superyacht Business of the Year at the 2016 Australian Marine Awards, Crew Pacific is a Cairns-based crew training and placement agency that also provides and arranges housing solutions for crew.

Crew Pacific offers its own range of renowned superyacht crew courses to help train crew out of season — two-day, five-day and eight-day courses for stewardesses, deckhands, and those entirely new to yachting are available, as well as free career information nights.

Crew houses in Byron Bay

Tallow Beach, Byron Bay

Youth Hostel Association (YHA) NSW, Byron Bay

Like its Sydney locations, Youth Hostel Association has ideal Byron Bay locations for crew using the area as a base for the next step in their yachting career.

Finding further crew accommodation in Australia

As an up and coming superyacht destination, sometimes finding an ideal place to stay and search for work can be tricky. In these cases, try contacting superyacht marinas and asking about the best accommodation in the area; these marinas deal with crew from superyachts regularly and may be able to help.

Here are a couple of the most popular superyacht marinas in Australia that would be good places to begin:

Sydney Superyacht Marina

Built for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the Sydney Superyacht Marina has remained the go-to destination for superyachts in Sydney and holds berths for boats up to 70m.

Sanctuary Cove Marina

This global yachting destination is also home to the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, so you can bet a lot of superyachts show up here during their time in Australia.
