Baltic Yachts bids to acquire Italian brand Cantieri di Pisa

Local reports in Italy suggest Finnish shipyard Baltic Yachts has made an official bid in excess of €3,000,000 to acquire prestigious Italian brand Cantieri di Pisa.

According to Pisa Today, Cantieri di Pisa, known for its celestial-named motor yachts and the Akhir series by Pier Luigi Spadolini, has also been the subject of at least one other international tender by a Middle Eastern holding corporation.

This latest development arrives after two months of inspections and negotiations by Baltic. Local authorities and bankruptcy administrators of Mondomarine, the now-defunct owners of Cantieri di Pisa, have 60 days to confirm the offer.

Since 2013, Professor Hans Georg Näder has been the majority shareholder in Baltic Yachts. As well as owning the decorated Baltic 175 Pink Gin and serving as CEO of the Ottobock medical technology group in Germany, Näder is helping reposition Baltic as a major name in the world of motor yachts – in addition to its frequent successes in the sailing sector.

Following requests from existing clients, Baltic moved into motor yachts to apply the same high levels of quality and innovation present in the sailing division to powered vessels. Since 2016, the company has launched a number of successful models.

Although Baltic has a strong reputation in the world of sailing yachts, the Cantieri di Pisa yard, which is located on the river Arno in Tuscany, has an insufficient draft for larger boats. It is assumed that – if successful – the acquisition would allow Baltic to split its sailing and motor yacht production more efficiently and expand production of the latter.
