General Coating completes two major superyacht refit projects

General Coating GmbH has announced the completion of two large-scale superyacht refit projects with its partner shipyard in northern Germany.

According to the coating specialists, the projects were carried out on two “well-known and respected” superyachts, measuring in at 80m and 115m LOA respectively, seeing large areas of their hulls and superstructures refinished.

Work included corrosion protection, filling, fairing, primer works and topcoat finishing. There was also a full antifouling system applied to one project, as well as having its large-scale fresh and black water tanks re-blasted and coated.

George Balmforth, manager of Yacht Contracts at General Coating said, “The projects ran over a length of six to seven months, during which we had to be extremely flexible with our manpower, as a large portion of the works were decided on a last-minute basis. This meant we had to up and sink the workforce on demand. We had no problem doing this of course, and I’m pleased to report that we were able to work on all jobs where and when needed to deliver on time.

“The systems used for these projects were a combination of Alexseal, Awlgrip and Joton, depending on the build spec and areas of the yacht to cover.”

The completion of the two projects comes soon after General Coating made significant investment in new equipment. The new equipment includes an industrial vacuum system for cleaning blast material from tanks and large blasted surfaces, a portable petrol tank, and an industrial ventilation system for tank blasting works.

George explained, “General Coating has recently invested heavily in new equipment for its future, in turn allowing customers the flexibility of enlisting all coating services from once source. All equipment can be offered wherever the project may take place.

“Our new workshop, blasting and painting facilities and new offices are also nearing completion at the new General Coating Yacht Refinishing headquarters in Hamburg, Germany.

“Although we have had to wait longer than expected for the city to permit build works, construction is well underway and we are now proceeding with the installation of our spray application and blast booths, and revamping the offices.

“We are hoping to have these projects completed by the end of summer 2017, at which time we will invite a number of companies and industry representatives for the grand opening and detailed viewing. We look forward to welcoming new and existing companies!”
