Leading marine sound and exhaust specialists, Halyard (M&I) Ltd has announced they have fitted a complete solution to Spirit Yachts’ latest custom build.
Halyard’s brief from Spirit Yachts’ managing director, Sean McMillan, was to keep the 75ft yacht as quiet as possible. Halyard’s solution was a comprehensive system comprising of sound insulation, an exhaust system for the main engine and generator and installing Aquadrive to reduce vibration.
Sean commented, “As a luxury, custom built yacht, reducing noise on this vessel and maximising passenger comfort was paramount. Due to our very high standards of build and design, Halyard's noise reduction systems were the only ones we considered for this project and we are delighted with the results.”
Halyard tackled the issue of airborne noise by fitting sound insulation materials on the bulkheads, where noise would be an issue with the engine in the saloon.
The exhaust noise was addressed by the installation of a custom built lift silencer, designed for use with engines positioned on or below the waterline and water separator, which helped reduce noise on the deck by 50%.
The final piece of the noise reduction puzzle was confronting structure borne noise. This was achieved with the installation of Halyard’s Aquadrive system, an anti-vibration system. The Aquadrive system’s thrust bearing transmits the thrust to the hull instead of the engine, reducing wear and tear significantly and is virtually maintenance free.
At the yacht’s recent sea trial, the noise reading in the saloon was an impressive 67 dB with the engine running at idle speed.
