Innovative ‘GPS Lifejacket Beacon’ granted sale approval for USA market

A new GPS-equipped tracking device, which can be attached to a lifejacket and activated by individuals in difficulty at sea, has received approval to be made available for sale throughout the USA.

The SafeLink R10 SRS (Survivor Recovery System) is a revolutionary device designed, tested and manufactured by UK-based Kannad Marine. Kannad, part of the Orolia Group, has longstanding expertise in emergency location beacons.

The waterproof, compact and ruggedly constructed device is designed to be carried by anyone who spends time on the water for work or leisure purposes.

Approval for the SafeLink R10 was granted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of Washington. The device will now be issued with a Grant of Authorisation certificate, approving it for use in the United States.

The R10 uses both GPS and AIS (Automatic Identification System) technology to send ‘structured’ alert messages. These signals send details of the wearer’s precise location to AIS equipment aboard nearby vessels within a typical four-mile radius.

Signals produced by the SafeLink R10 also indicate the bearing and distance of the wearer, an innovative first for such devices.

It is hoped that the R10 device will greatly improve the chances of finding and recovering casualties at sea.

“With this FCC certification the United States joins a growing list of countries that have granted type approval for the SafeLink R10 SRS,” said Ross Wilkinson, Global Sales Director of McMurdo Ltd, another company in the Orolia Group.

“The R10 has recently been recognised for its innovation and technology within the marine safety sector by being named the Overall Winner of the 2012 Pittman Innovation awards.

“We are delighted that consumers in the States are now able to benefit from this award-winning must-have safety product.”

The SafeLink R10 is available through Kannad Marine’s network of international distributors and via Survitec Survival Products Inc as its exclusive distributor in the US.
