M/Y Attessa IV involved in fatal collision

The 101-metre (331-foot) M/Y Attessa IV is reported to have been involved in a serious collision with a 20-metre (65-foot) sportfisher, resulting in one death and several minor injuries.

Local reports suggest the incident took place on Friday (26th October), nine miles off the coast of Imperial Beach, which is located between San Diego, U.S.A. and Tijuana, Mexico. Named by various news outlets as Prowler, the 20m sportfisher was returning to shore from a fishing trip when it collided with  Attessa IV.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a call from Attessa IV reporting the incident at approximately 8:00pm local time.

Hung and Ken Ngo, a father and son aboard Prowler, spoke to local news outlet 10News to describe the events and expressed their dismay that there had been no warnings or signals from the vessel’s radar system.

“Something hit the boat hard. Like bang,” Ngo recalled. “The whole right side of the deck was gone – the rail, everything. It looked like […] somebody just cut it off.”

Despite the significant damage Prowler sustained, the vessel stayed afloat. Eyewitnesses at the scene noted that Attessa IV had been scratched in the incident, but was still seaworthy.

There is some uncertainty as to the exact happenings after the crash, but it is known that at least one of the individuals from Prowler was airlifted to a local hospital with critical injuries, before later being pronounced dead. The remaining 17 passengers on board the sportfisher were returned to shore.

The U.S. Coast Guard is still investigating what caused the incident.
