New electric yacht scheduled for launch in 2016

Netherlands-based company, Soel Yacht, has developed a new electric yacht, called the SoelCat 12, which will run completely on solar power.

Scheduled for launch next year, the SoelCat 12 has a total lithium battery capacity of 120kWh and can operate for six hours at a speed of eight knots. The yacht is 11.8 meters long and can hold up to 24 passengers, reaching a maximum speed of 15 knots.

The price for the futuristic solar electric yacht has not yet been revealed, but it has been previously reported that the price will be affordable.. Rather, the solar-powered mini yacht is meant to offer a better way for travellers to get around when they are on holiday.

Joep Koster, designer and architect at Soel Yachts commented, “As climate change concerns grow, more people have embraced ecotourism (environmentally responsible and sustainable travel to natural areas), and while resorts have adopted all kinds of green initiatives, there hasn’t been as much attention paid to making hotel and tour transport sustainable.”
