UK superyacht technology manufacturer Ocean Yacht Systems (OYS) has announced that it has been contracted to supply the much-awaited new Perini Navi 60m superyacht series with its latest RDE (Rim Driven Electric) thruster.
The first of the latest model of builder Perini Navi’s series, Hull c.2193, is scheduled for delivery in 2013. It will be the first vessel in the series to have an RDE thruster.
The thruster has been welcomed into the marketplace as a quieter and lighter alternative to other electric thrusters.
“We have a close relationship with Perini Navi,” said Mark Barwell, Sales Director for OYS. “It is great that we are now extending the offerings of OYS to Perini Navi.
“We are looking forward to working with them more on our thruster range.”
OYS is already Perini Navi’s supplier of choice for standing rigging and hydraulic vangs and backstays. It has supplied components to 90% of the Perini Navi fleet currently at sea.
Hull c.2193 will be installed with a RDE-0650-S-090, which is a 90kw/120hp swing deploying thruster. The propeller is the only moving part of the RDE’s design, so there is no need for expensive rim bearings or watertight seals.
The RDE therefore saves weight, cost and is more reliable. The thruster will be delivered to Perini Istanbul-Yildiz shipyard in Viareggio in northern Tuscany, Italy, towards the end of 2012.
