Salvage firm sets deadline for purchase of final Sensation yacht

A New Zealand salvage firm has set a two-month deadline for interested parties to buy the last remaining Sensation Yachts hull as the yard is dismantled. If a buyer is not found by March 2018, the 49.5-metre (162-foot) Hull SY32 will be scrapped.

Sensation Yachts began building the yacht more than nine years ago working to DNV (Det Norske Veritas) standards, but the project was thrown into doubt 12 months later when the yard ran into financial difficulties.

However, Ward Demolition Limited has identified the completed hull and part-finished superstructure as being salvageable if the right buyer is found.

Peter Ward, managing director of Ward Demolition, told Stuff.co.nz, “It’s a big boat and half-finished. The [previous] owners have already spent millions on it, and we have been told that its up to code to the point that it has been built.”

Hull SY32’s specification includes a 9.2m (30ft) beam, a 1.98m (6ft) draught and a total displacement of 280 tonnes. The hull has scope to be fitted with twin 2,250hp Caterpillar 3521B diesel engines and a 72,000 litres of fuel tankage.

Accommodation could be for up to 12 guests across five cabins, while eight crewmembers could also be accommodated if the project was completed at a new site.

Sensation Yachts ceased trading in 2009, but legal disputes over the premises prevented the chattels from being sold off until now.
