Departure date is approaching for Richard Mayon-White as he makes his last few preparations to sail across the Atlantic tracing the latitude of the Tropic of Cancer in his diminutive 6.5m Mini Transat yacht. Richard is aiming to raise £40,000 to be split equally between two great causes, the Sobell House Hospice in Oxford and the national charity Sail 4 Cancer, which gives respite to cancer sufferers and their families through days out on the water and sailing holidays.
Richard will depart from Gibraltar on 26th October, weather permitting, and could complete the Atlantic crossing in 28 days if weather is favourable. His final destination is Fort Lauderdale, USA.
Richard is an experienced ocean sailor, and has already rowed across the Atlantic and cycled many thousands of miles for charity. However this will be the first time he has undertaken a trans-ocean solo voyage.
Richard commented “Preparations have gone well and bar a few small last minute jobs, the boat is now ready for the crossing. I'm ready too!”
Richard’s determination to undertake such a tough challenge grew from his experience of the amazing care provided by Sobell House, where his mother spent her last few weeks before her death two years ago. Fundraising has already achieved more than a third of his target.
The Tropic of Cancer runs around the Earth at approximately 23 degrees north, marking the most northerly position at which the sun may appear directly overhead. Richard will sail south when he leaves Gibraltar, following the western coastline of Morocco and the Western Sahara, until reaching the Tropic of Cancer which he will follow for 3000 miles until reaching Ft Lauderdale.
The prevailing winds should help him on his way, however tropical storms and even hurricanes could provide some challenges.
