Eight quick and simple hairstyles for superyacht stewardesses

Keeping hair off the face has become customary for many working professionals, with the yachting industry no exception.

From simple ponytails and tidy buns through to more intricate braids and twists, we present eight quick and relatively simple hairstyles for female yacht crew members. It ensures a professional look, as told by bloggers and influencers around the web.

Eight safe-for-work hairstyles for female yacht crew members

Ponytails

For those with no time to spare, the classic ponytail (as we have come to know and love it) is often the quickest and easiest solution to getting hair up and away from the face.

For those with a few more minutes to spare, the basic ponytail can be upgraded by hiding the hairband or tie with a length of hair or an accessory. Alternatively, it can be made more interesting by styling loose fringes and side sections into braids, quiffs and more.

1. Low-knotted ponytail from SureChamp

Pull hair back into a low, smooth pony at the nape of the neck before dividing it in the middle and securing in a loose ‘knot’. Fix loose ends with kirby grips/bobby pins, and then use hairspray to tame any fly-away hairs.

2. Side-braided ponytail by Hair Romance

Begin by braiding the top front section of hair on one side of the head from the temple downward towards the mid-section of the head. Secure the ends of the braid with a clear elastic or pin then stretch it out to make it look thicker. Style the rest of the hair into a ponytail, then remove the pin or elastic so it's now tied in with the ponytail. Take a section of the ponytail and wrap it around the base to disguise the elastic, then tuck the ends and any fly-aways inwards and fix with pins or grips.

Buns

The bun is great for getting hair completely up and out of the way – especially on those second-day hair or detail-cleaning days.

There are plenty of variations to make the classic bun much more interesting while still being professional, including twisting, braiding, bunching and accessories. A few of our favourites are listed below.

3. Low-braided bun from Zarias

Secure hair into a low, loose pony before splitting the ‘tail’ in two and looping the two sections over the top of the band to create two twists. Repeat lower down to cover the hair tie, then braid the remaining hair of the ponytail before wrapping this around the band until all hair is up, fixing it with kirby grips.

4. Fishtail bun by Hair & Makeup By Steph

For the more advanced stylist with a little more hair to go around, is the fishtail bun. Start by putting hair into a high pony, then begin to plait the hair into a fishtail braid; dividing the hair into two sections before moving a small piece of hair from the outside of one section and passing it to the inside of the other.

Continue down to the bottom and secure with a clear elastic. Loosen the plait by gently pulling on the sides. Next, simply wrap the braid around the base of the ponytail and secure any fly-aways with bobby pins and hairspray. Watch the video tutorial.

Plaits and braids

Great for keeping hair out the way while underway are plaits and braids.

5. Side braid by Gal Meets Glam

Begin braiding the lower lengths of hair just above the shoulder, securing with a hair tie or elastic at the bottom. Twist the loose fringe section up and away from the face, securing this and any shorter loose hairs on the far side of the head with Kirby grips.

6. Crown braid by Maven Beverly Hills

Part your hair in the middle and divide into two even sections. Braid each section and secure the ends with a clear elastic, gently loosening the braid to make them fatter. Next, flip the braids up and over the top of the head, securing them to the head at the top (and down along the sides) with bobby pins. Twists and chignons

Classic twists and chignons are as at home on a superyacht as they are at an event.

7. Faux fishtail via BLDG 25 Blog

For the fishtail effect without any braiding, pull hair back into a low pony and secure with a small clear elastic. Split the hair in half just above the elastic to create a vertical opening before threading the pony up and through the gap, looping it back around. A few inches below, wrap another elastic around, create another opening and repeat. Keep doing this until you have only a few inches remaining at the bottom of the pony.

Half up, half down

Where rules allow, elaborate half-up, half-down hair often makes for pretty yet tidy alternatives to up dos.

8. Half-up twist

Begin by taking two small sections of hair just above the ear on one side of your head, twisting one over the other. Add a new section of hair to the front piece, and one to the back piece before twisting one over the other again. Continue twisting this way until you reach the back of your head, then secure with a clear elastic. Repeat the steps on the other side of the head. With both twists secured at the back of your head, make a little opening above the elastic of one twist to pull the other through. Finish by securing with bobby pins. The elastics can then be removed or cut to leave a neat finish.
