vdL Composites GmbH composite services

Together with ATL Composites, M.u.H. Von der Linden formed a joint venture business, vdL Composites GmbH. It produces a range of composite panels and planks, including:

  • DuFLEX - Lightweight structural sandwich panels
  • Featherlight - Non-structural light weight panels for interior applications
  • DuraKore - Composite strip planks with a balsa core and wood veneer
  • Parts made from DuFLEX Panels with inserts

DuFLEX / foam panels are cored with either structural linear or cross-linked foam cores. Closed-cell foams in structural panels combine high stiffness and strength-to-weight ratios with superior toughness. Structural foams used in DuFLEX Composite Panels provide low weight, excellent stiffness, good impact strength, and good sound and thermal insulation. Typical applications for foam-cored structural panels include marine hulls, decks, superstructures, and bulkheads.

Featherlight panels are designed for lightweight, non-structural interior applications in luxury yachts. The panels optimise weight and stability and offer options like low-density PVC X-linked foam or PET foam cores. Featherlight panels are versatile, easily forming curved surfaces without complex moulds. Common uses include marine cabinetry, bulkheads, floors, doors, and architectural panels requiring thermal and acoustic insulation.

DuFLEX and Featherlight panels can also incorporate high density inserts using materials such as PVC foam, PET foam, high density Coosa polyurethane foam, and solid FRP. Including high density inserts allows for effective surface screw fixing, tapping, and through-bolting without the risk of localised pull-out, buckling or compression failures. Inserts can also be used locally for perimeter edging in order to offer a more robust and impact resistant panel edge, often eliminating the need for de-coring.

Having Inserts included in the panel manufacture, and not having to fit on the job, offers fabricators a cost-effective balance between mechanical properties, weight and cost. Finished, routed 2D parts can also be provided with any level of insert complexity, and are nested for optimal sheet utilisation.
