Yacht Sewage Solutions (YSS) is a yacht sewage treatment specialist that offers essential services to superyachts. It offers bespoke solutions for its clients including sewage system checks, overhauls, installations, and odour fighting.

Based in Italy and Malta, and operating throughout France and Monaco, YSS (formerly known as YSSG Yacht Sewage Solutions Genova) is a leading yacht sewage treatment specialist with a thorough knowledge of black water and vacuum toilet systems on board.

With a PhD in biochemistry, founder and CEO of YSS, Alessandro Repetto, and his team of expert factory-trained technicians, understand the importance of efficient yacht treatment systems. Ensuring the system is running correctly is of the utmost importance; a poorly maintained sewage treatment system has the potential to summon a whole host of issues for a yacht.

YSS is able to assist yachts of all sizes with all leading global sewage treatment systems.

Yacht sewage treatment plants

The act of maintaining an efficient sewage system on board should never be overlooked. Failure to properly maintain a yacht treatment system can result in a heavy fine if the vessel is discharging sewage into the ocean.

Ultimately, the work carried out by YSS has two benefits: it preserves the operation of a yacht and simultaneously helps protect the environment by eradicating this type of discharge. After it has treated the black and grey water on board, it is permitted to be discharged overboard without causing pollution. This is thanks to the separation of the sludge and the disinfection through the UV system.

YSS offers numerous treatment options to yacht owners, captains, and crew to maintain a vessel’s sewage treatment systems. These options include:

Sewage System checks

This consists of a thorough inspection of the system followed by a test to ensure that it is operating to a high standard. It is also important to ensure there are no underlying issues present, and if there is, that they are addressed quickly and correctly.

Basic sewage system plant service

The basic service performed by YSS consists of a system inspection followed by a deep clean of the system and its components. This includes the flotation tank, sludge chamber, and UV system. Prior to this, the team at YSS will perform a full test in order to confirm everything is operating to the highest standard possible.

Advanced sewage system plant service

The advanced service consists of everything in the basic option with the addition of a full dismount and overhaul of all pumps. The YSS technicians meticulously inspect each part of the yacht’s sewage treatment system to ensure it is functioning to an optimal level.

Design, planning and installation of new yacht sewage treatment systems

YSS can assist new build yachts and yachts undergoing refits with system design and drawings, sewage system plumbing, electrical supply, installation, programming, set up, and sewage system testing.

Yacht sewage system upgrades, refits and retrofits

In addition to helping yachts with sewage system servicing, descaling, flushing, and cleaning, YSS can also upgrade existing yacht sewage systems. It can modify systems, parts, and retrofit the yachts sewage treatment plant.

Technical touchscreen experts for trouble shooting

Some of the latest sewage treatment plants are controlled and trouble-shooted through touchscreen interfaces which can be confusing. YSS have the experience and expertise to solve these problems.

24/7 helpline during the season

YSS provides a 24/7 hotline to help chief engineers and captains trouble shoot emergency situations during busy charter seasons.

Yacht sewage system add-ons

It can also provide:

  • Tank transfer systems for sewage holding tanks
  • Grease separators for galley water treatment
  • Conditioning systems for sewage holding tanks

Spare parts for all leading yacht sewage treatment plants, pumps and associated engineering

Based in Italy and Malta, YSS has direct contact with all leading manufacturers and can help clients to source spare parts for yacht sewage treatment systems or pumps.

Superyacht pipe descaling

YSS provides a thorough descaling service for superyachts, designed specifically for the removal of hard water scale, urine scale build-up, and accumulated waste in vacuum pipes and toilet systems.

Before and after shots from YSSG of suuperyacht pipes that need descaling

Signs that pipes need descaling include foul odours, slow-draining water, backed-up water, and corrosion. YSS uses environmentally friendly and efficient treatments to provide a thorough deep cleaning of yacht pipelines, improving the efficiency of the on-board vacuum toilet system.

Odour Fight Systems (OFS) and H₂S prevention

During use, the level of black or grey water in the yacht’s holding tank changes. This, along with the motion of the yacht, causes air to be dispersed from the yacht’s tanks. This air contains a large amount of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), a hazardous gas that is poisonous and highly flammable. H₂S can do serious damage to the human body and high levels of inhalation can be deadly. There are other names for H₂S, including sewer gas, stink damp, swamp gas, and manure gas, and it has an extremely strong smell similar to rotten eggs.

YSSG Black and Grey superyacht pipe cleaning equipment

Not only is H₂S highly dangerous, but it can also cause damage to the yacht by potentially creating corrosion on board. This can lead to expensive and unnecessary repairs.

YSS now offers a solution to prevent these H₂S problems on yachts without installing new aeration lines and fillers, which normally require extensive work and can prove costly.

Prevention of yacht sewage system H₂S

YSSG provides a biological treatment called Odour Fight Systems (OFS), which is optimised for installation aboard yachts within vacuum toilets, grey water systems, and gravity systems. OFS has been developed by a team of highly experienced engineers and prevents the production of H₂S.

It has gone through a rigorous testing process and is currently installed on a large number of superyachts. OFS works with a biological treatment that uses a specially developed mixture of nitrates, preventing septicity and the production of H₂S.

Benefits of OFS for yachts

The OFS has a wide range of benefits to yacht sewage treatment systems and is a popular option for YSS clients. Most importantly, it decreases the health risks that exposure to H₂S poses, and it also reduces corrosion to equipment, increases the life of the holding tank, pipes, and sewage treatment plants. This therefore prevents the need for expensive repairs beyond regular maintenance work. OFS also eradicates the unpleasant rotting egg smell that is produced by H₂S.

JETS servicing schedule for yacht toilets

As a renowned yacht sewage treatment specialist, YSS collaborated with Stelio Bardi Marine Technologies and JETS to introduce the innovative JETS service schedule for yacht toilets.

This proactive schedule prevents costly and inconvenient toilet system failures during the peak of the high season. It enables yacht owners and operators to ensure optimal vessel conditions, avoiding unexpected disruptions and expensive emergency repairs.
