A yacht crew’s problems explained

Louise Reardon of Island Shipping and Trading Co. Ltd has recently published an article called the “Tricky Trials of a Yacht Captain”, which analyses and explains what both the captain and crew are expected to do when complex issues arise at sea.

The article explains how charter guests and owners place high expectations on the crew to provide the perfect solution to any problem, quickly and efficiently.

The article relates specifically to the BVI charter industry, and according to the article, “The BVI has developed a charter industry based on a ‘never say no’ philosophy, where the discerning guest can have anything they desire at any time they choose.”

It goes on to give examples of the type of problems which can arise on board a yacht, according to the article, “This culture of five-star service is endemic of the BVI industry. These teams must be equally quick to switch to an itinerary with gear breakdown – perhaps the chef takes the guests on an island tour while the captain finds the spare parts or a jury rig to see the charter through.”
