Amels steps up solar power capacity

Amels, the superyacht division of Damen Shipyards Group, says solar power generation at its yard on the Dutch North Sea now accounts for nearly one-third of its annual electricity required.

In the current edition of its online magazine Finest Moments, Amels stated, “At your Vlissingen city yard, we now have 5,394 solar panels generating power – a peak of 1.6 MWp – enough for 30% of our annual electricity needs.”

Amels noted that this equates to the power consumption 5,000 households, adding, “We expect the solar panels to reduce our CO2 emissions by 20%.”

Amels environmentally friendly approach is a part of a Damen-wide project at all of the group’s Dutch yards, where 39,000 panels generate 12MW of electric power. Damen has outsourced the installation and maintenance of the solar power system.

On a sunny day - “Yes, we do have them in Holland,” Amels joked - the superyacht builder can generate 100% of its electricity requirements. Excess power, generated on weekends and holidays, can be fed to the local power grid.

Amels operates the largest superyacht facilities in the Netherlands that include three dry docks of well over 350 metre (1,148 feet).
