Portland Port has cemented its place as one of the South West’s premier ports after building two new berths that can accommodate larger ships.
A £5 million scheme to revamp the Queen’s Pier has increased berth capacity from six to eight berths. This brings the total number of large deep-water berths available at Portland from 10 to 12.
Now the range of ships that can dock at Portland Port has been widened to:
The berth known as Q5/7 can accommodate ships with a 200m LOA (length overall) while the Q6/8 berth can accommodate ships with a 220m LOA. Larger vessels can also be accommodated, by arrangement with the duty pilot. The berths have the following depths alongside: Q5 – 7.9m. Q6 – 8.2m. Q7 and Q8 – 9.0m.
The new berths are already earmarked for use during the Olympic Sailing events of 2012. Super yachts will be able to take advantage of the additional berthing capacity in the run-up to, and during, the Olympic period. In addition to the opportunity to take in the games themselves, Portland provides a private and secure alternative for scheduled work and maintenance that few other locations are able to match.
Ian McQuade, General Manager (Commercial) at Portland Port, said: ‘The new berths further enhance the Port’s facilities. Portland is an ideal location for the full range of shipping activities and offers the closest available berths to the main EC shipping lanes on the western channel.’
He also said he was grateful to residents for their patience while the Queen’s Pier renovations were being carried out. Ian added: ‘We’re aware that the noise of the pile drivers could be heard from quite some distance away, so I want to say thank you to everyone for bearing with us as we made these improvements. We believe that the two new berths allow Portland Port to perform better and make an even more meaningful contribution to the South West economy.’
