Branagh Marine Composites provides race support for Copa del Rey yachts

Branagh Marine Composites (BMC) has announced that they have their three mini maxi clients in the top three positions at the Copa del Rey 2014.

The team that make up BMC have worked with the top race yachts in the world for many years, with three of the top mini maxis having chosen BMC to be part of their support team.

The Kings Cup in Palma de Mallorca took place earlier in August and the “battle of the titans” involved all three the mini maxis as they thrashed it out on the water.

A spokesperson for the Copa del Rey said, “The fight for the title in the class Gaastra IRC 0 was fierce throughout the week. Four out of the five mini maxi boats won at least one of the 11 races held, and the top three teams faced the last day separated by only three points. The title was decided in the final race with victory and championship taken by American George Sakellaris’ "Shockwave". Hap Fauth’s "Bella Mente" (third in final race) and Roberto Tomasini’s "Robertissima III" (second in final race) completed the podium.”

In the run up for the regatta, BMC were commissioned to undertake a weight reduction project on S/Y Robertissima, removing original structures and replacing them with new, lightweight ones.

Luke Hendy, commercial director of Branagh Marine Composites commented, “As the boat was originally set up for offshore racing and would now be concentrating on the inshore circuit, there were a number of potential weight savings to be made. BMC removed several interior non-structural panels, built a new lighter 40/40 instrument bracket for the rig as well as a new fore deck hatch and companionway steps. All these components came out considerably lighter than the originals. The brief from the captain was too tweak as many things as possible to reduce weight and we achieved that.”

The three podium winners, and BMC clients, in the IRC 0 class were lifted out the water for further work with BMC including a new bowsprit for S/Y Shockwave in order to improve their downwind speed.
