Classic superyacht Marala undergoes restoration at Pendennis

British yard Pendennis has commenced work on a “painstaking” restoration on the 59-metre (193-foot) superyacht Marala.

Built in steel by Camper and Nicholsons in 1931, Marala is due to undergo a rigorous 18-month programme of work at the yard’s Falmouth base.

The work will specifically focus on retaining Marala’s original character of the 1930s whilst also modernising all on-board systems and technology. Pendennis will take the time to restore the yacht’s profile to her original lines and carry out a complete paint programme and refurbishment of the yacht’s teak decks.

Other work will see upgrades to the yacht’s steelwork, as well as domestic and electrical systems. London design studio Muza Lab has been commissioned to restyle the interior décor and overhaul the guest area. According to the yard, the new interior design will “respect and celebrate the 1930s spirit of the vessel”.

The restoration project comes just two years after the yacht was sold in 2017 – for the first time in 50 years. During Marala’s lifetime, she has undergone a number of modifications, which has included a conversion for naval service during the Second World War, as well as sailing under the names of Gaviota, Zapala and Evadne. She does retain her original layout and engines.

Discussing the works, Marala’s captain noted the new owner “understood that Marala’s essential engineering requirements would impact her interior”.

Mike Carr, joint managing director of Pendennis, said the yard’s track record of carrying out complex restoration projects on yachts including Haida1929 and Shamrock V has given the company “a deep respect for preserving the heritage of these yacht for generations to come”.
