16-year-old Greta Thunberg plans to begin a ‘climate tour’ of America, commencing with sailing from Europe to North America mid-August. The Swedish climate activist will make her journey on sailing yacht Malizia, a completely emission-free ocean-going yacht.
The 18-metre (59-foot) race boat features solar panels and hydrogen generators for power generation.
Thunberg will head initially to the US, and then plans to sail to Central and South America, continuing her voyage well into 2020.
The climate activist will join two big climate demonstrations, on 20th and 27th September, and will talk at the United Nations Climate Action Summit on 23rd September.
The 16-year-old Swede will take a years’ leave from school to partake in various events across America and meet individuals who are seriously susceptible to climate change and ecological repercussions, as well as other climate activists and decision makers.
In a Facebook post, Thunberg commented, “Good news! I will attend the UN climate summit in New York, the COP25 in Santiago and other events. I was offered a ride on the 60ft Malizia II racing boat. In mid-August we will sail across the Atlantic from Great Britain to New York.”
Thunberg and her father will make the crossing with Malizia captain Boris Herrmann, Monaco royal family member Pierre Casiraghi and a Swedish documentary producer, Nathan Grossman.
The duration of the journey is anticipated to be about two weeks.
