Custom made silencers from Halyard for Discovery 57

Working in conjunction with Halyard, experts in the reduction of engine, structural and airborne noise, the Discovery 57, which launched at Southampton Boat Show has been designed with a special sound insulated walk-in engine room.

In order to ensure the space would be sufficient to house everything and leave enough room to enable easy access for engine checks and servicing, Discovery created a complete mock-up of the engine room at its factory.  With the Volvo D3 150hp engine Onan generator in place, The Discovery design team worked closely with Halyard to ensure every element of engine noise, airborne noise and structural noise created within the boat was identified, and solutions created to make this boat as quiet as possible.

To reduce structural noise, Discovery custom-designed all the bulkheads with a high-density barrier and then faced them with Halyard’s noise insulating material. This provides an outstanding combination of noise absorption and loss of noise transmission through the boat. In addition, all the access panels were designed with rubber sealing strips and all ancillary pumps and motors were rubber mounted for quietness.

The engine room itself is completely faced with Halyard's fireproof noise insulating material, and houses Halyard silencers and water separators, which drastically reduce noise from both the generator and the propulsion engine.  An Aquadrive has been installed to reduce structural noise between the engine and the propellers.

Nigel Stuart, managing director of Discovery Yachts said the company had spent over two years working closely with Halyard to ensure that any element of noise onboard was identified and reduced.  "We have housed anything that makes a noise, from as small as the click of a heater pump to the noise of the autopilot motor, in this sound proofed room.  Even the cooling fans have been sourced to be low noise.  Halyard's engineers have been involved with this concept right from the start, and we are absolutely delighted with the result.  When you're onboard, you cannot even hear the generator running."

Designed for long distance blue water cruising, the Discovery 57 is unusual in creating a walk in engine room which provides sufficient space for at least two people to easily access the engine, generators, watermaker, pumps and alarm systems housed in it.  "We work on the F1 standard," explained Nigel Stuart, "Twenty seconds to find a problem and 20 minutes to fix it. You can only do that if you have easy access to everything and the right information to hand.  From Halyard's exhaust temperature alarm, which alerts you if there's any blockage, through to waterproof plug and play connectors which make checks and servicing fast and easy, the Discovery 57 has been designed to make life on board stress free, quiet and easy."
