Largest sailing yacht on the market offered for sale by Burgess

90m Athena, currently the largest sailing yacht on the market, is being offered for sale through Burgess Yachts.

Custom-built by Royal Huisman and designed by the renowned late designer Pieter Beelsnijder in association with Gerard Dykstra & Partners, Burgess describes Athena as representing “the very highest calibre of Northern Europe shipbuilding”.

Delivered in 2004, Athena is the fourth largest sailing yacht in the world and underwent a comprehensive refit in 2011, with a 10-year survey performed in 2014. She has won a number of awards including Best Sailing Yacht over 40m at the 2005 ShowBoats Design Awards.

The interior of Athena is arranged over three levels, and was designed by Rebecca Bradley. According to Burgess, Athena has “an environment of grace and classically styled modern elegance”, with rich, soft furnishings and lightly stained mahogany.

Athena features a bridge deck saloon or media room, as well as a spacious main saloon which leads to the dining room. Below deck, five cabins can accommodate 10 guests, with a full-beam master suite featuring separate study, walk-in wardrobe and luxurious bathroom complete with Jacuzzi tub.

On deck, Burgess describes Athena’s “beautiful varnished teak joinery, crafted to exceptional standards”. Exterior spaces for seating and al fresco dining stretch over two levels, and a 360° bird’s eye view is also available from a height of 59m via the hydraulically hoisted crow’s nest. Athena also features touch button technology to control her Panamax masts, which are rigged with 2,500 sq.m of sail power.

Describing Athena’s performance, Burgess also commented, “A true world cruiser with several circumnavigations to her name, Athena expertly fuses exhilarating performance with the refinements reminiscent of the golden age of yachting.

“As the last yacht to slide down the ways before the great Wolter Huisman passed away, she deservedly carries his legacy on into the future.”
