Leros Marina, a modern Greek marina with berthing for vessels up to 60-metres LOA, has been awarded with a world-leading Blue Flag award for the second consecutive year for its continued efforts in environmental training.
First awarded by the Blue Flag International Jury on 9th April in Copenhagen, Denmark, the accolade was announced by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN) - the Greek national operator of the international Blue Flag awards for swimming beaches and marinas. Leros Marina is one of 4,000 sites to receive the renowned eco-label for the 2015 season.
The marina, which was shortlisted for the award after inspectors of the HSPN and the international carrier for the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) visited the marina last summer, saw its efforts measured against 25 strict criteria, including water purity, waste management and recycling practices, as well as proper organisation of access, signage, safety and operation of the facility, among others.
Prior to winning the 2014 Blue Flag award last year, Leros Marina applied three environmental actions which included; an environmental seminar for marina personnel in separating waste products following the cleaning process of the southern marina beach; training personnel in the use of antifouling agents in the marina; and an educational visit for the Department of Economics and Informatics of the Vocational Lyceum of Leros.
In preparation for the 2015 awards, Leros Marina implemented a further six environmental training activities in order to secure its second consecutive win, including educational visits which were arranged for the five Economic and Engineering Departments of the Vocational Lyceum of Leros and a student visit for environmental education by the Elementary School of Agia Marina.
First established in 1989, the marina is located at the head of Lakki Bay on the Greek island of Leros. It offers 220 berths across its five floating pontoons with mooring lines, electricity and water, as well as a modern refit and repair boatyard with space for up to 600 boats.
Adding to their marine facilities for the 2015 season, Leros Marina has introduced a fully operational sail loft to offer small repairs and alterations to the tailoring of sails, covers and more.
