Non-profit organisation launches to end superyachts’ dependency of single-use plastic

Non-profit organisation Clear Ocean Pact has been launched in a bid to reduce the amount of single-use plastic pollution inflicted by the yachting industry.

The initiative is driven by a desire to unite the yachting industry to reduce its dependency on single-use plastic. The organisation aims to create a ripple effect and raise awareness surrounding micro-plastic pollution.

Recent studies revealed that by 2050 there will more plastic in the oceans than fish – with every 10,000 serving crew members disposing with an estimated 3.2 million plastic water bottles each year, which equates to 100 tonnes of single-use plastic waste.

According to the company’s website, Clear Ocean Pact has been developed to “provoke thought, create engagement and to unite the superyacht industry with a common set of achievable pledges in order to start making a change from the bottom up”.

With a dynamic set of pledges, the organisation aims to reverse the impact caused by decades of neglect.

The pledges are as follows:

1. To avoid any use of plastic bottled drinking water on board.

2. To filter and safely dispose of all washing machine microplastic waste.

3. To eliminate the use of all single-use plastic items with readily available alternatives, starting with the items due to be banned by the EU in 2021 such as plastic cotton buds, cutlery, plates, straws, drink-stirrers and balloon sticks.

4. To reduce the use of single-use plastic toiletries on board.

5. To actively source provisions with low single-use plastic footprint packaging.

The organisation’s target is to have 1000 superyachts pledged by November 2020.
