Sanlorenzo launches the ‘Sanlorenzo Academy’

Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo has launched an important new project for young people, named the Sanlorenzo Academy. The series of courses will offer specialised training opportunities for young people to find employment.

The project is a collaboration with Italian training institution CISITA, with support from Confindustria La Spezia, Alfa Liguria, Municipality of La Spezia and the Port Authority, and co-funded by donations from the Region of Liguria (European Social Fund 2014-2020).

Acting as a bridge between Liguria’s technical and professional schools and companies, the Sanlorenzo Academy aims to introduce specialised professionals with technical and practical boating skills into the world of work.

With Sanlorenzo and the contractors involved committed to hire at the end of the internship, 60% of those who pass the final exam will also earn a temporary employment contract for at least six months.

Starting in mid-November, the first course aims at training people in the production area and on board. This will include:

  • Polyvalent boating operators – eight professionals with many skills suitable for all the stages of production processes
  • Sailors in charge of on-board technical equipment – eight professionals with basic skills in the fields of plant engineering, engines, and electronics, and experts in typical on-board duties

The one-year course will include 800 hours of classroom and lab lessons as well as a 6-month internship. The overall aim of this course is to provide students with technical and practical skills in addition to “soft skills” such as managing stress, conflicts, and planning and communication skills.

With more courses already being planned for early 2019, new professionals to the Sanlorenzo Academy will be trained in courses such as ‘installers/maintenance technicians for boat plumbing appliances’ and ‘Installers/maintenance technicians for boat electric appliances’ courses.
