Silent Yachts announces sale of fourth hull in Silent 80 series

Austrian yard Silent Yachts has announced the sale of the fourth unit in its flagship Silent 80 series (previously known as Silent 79).

The first solar-electric catamaran in the Silent 80 series was sold to a South African owner, with delivery planned for early 2020. The other three units now sold are also due to be delivered in 2020.

Neil Murray, owner of the first Silent 80, said, “To me, this yacht is a great synthesis of form and function. My intent is to promote the concept of solar yachting and I want people to see elegance in the concept, not just practicality.”

Founder and CEO of Silent Yachts, Michael Köhler, created the Silent 80 concept, while Amedeo Migal of MICAD is responsible for naval architecture. Marco Casali of Too Design designed both the exterior and interior.

“I think solar-electric boats are the future, that is why I immediately agreed to work with Michael Köhler on his exciting venture,” noted Casali.

He added, “Solar power is about square metres, so we need to dedicate as much surface to the solar panels as possible, while keeping the overall balance in shape. In my opinion, we managed that with the Silent 80. What I tried to achieve is an interesting Italian design, sophisticated and refined. This is a nice-looking yacht that meets efficiency.”

The Silent 80 series is available in several layouts, with a large saloon on the main deck and a galley, lounge and dining area inside. Accommodation is for up to 10 guests across five cabins – these can either incorporate a double bed or two singles.

Power comes from a pair of 250 kW electric engines, each in “E-Power” version, for a top speed of 18 knots - offering total autonomy with no fuel, fumes, exhausts or noise. The series is capable of going at six to seven knots in complete silence, with unlimited range passing 100 nautical miles per day.
