Supermarket chain Carrefour has launched the UAE's first “sail-thru” supermarket off the coast of Dubai.
Named ‘Bites and More by the Shore’, the custom-built “Aqua Pod” is anchored at sea stocks and more than 300 items, ranging from dry foods to personal care products.
Passengers aboard superyachts can order from their boats and have their groceries delivered by a skiff inside 45 minutes, while Jet Skis and tenders can collect orders at the Aqua Pod’s window.
The superyacht supermarket is also equipped to serve those relaxing on Dubai’s beaches – including Kite beach, Jumeirah public beach and Al Sufouh beach – who can place orders via the Carrefour app.
The supermarket is open six days a week from 10:00am to 6:00pm. It was designed and created by Aquatic Architects Design Studio (AADS) in Dubai.
The pod boasts an eco-friendly design and draws power from rechargeable batteries. It is also equipped with a Seabin, which vacuums debris and litter from the sea into its holding tank for safe disposal.
Miguel Povedano, chief operating officer for Carrefour UAE, noted in a release, “With Dubai’s stunning coastline being enjoyed by millions of people each year, it is a natural next step to cater to our customers with relevant products in a locale where they are not currently being served.”
