Superyachts turn to global fuel companies

There has been an increase in superyachts using global fuel companies for their fuelling needs, according to leading yacht services company Guadeloupe Yacht Concierge. Instead of using local yacht agents or fuel companies when cruising the world’s most inspiring destinations, superyachts are more frequently using global fuel companies to follow them around the world, supplying bunkers whenever they are required.

According to Ariane Graf at Guadeloupe Yacht Concierge, “We are receiving less and less requests for fuel from superyachts and yachts that are visiting Guadeloupe, as fuel companies are now going global and following their yacht clients to supply them everywhere they go.”

In the past few years the superyacht industry has seen the emergence and expansion of many global fuel companies, specifically designed to supply the world’s largest superyachts, as well as the smaller yachts, with fuel wherever they may need it.

Companies such as Peninsula Petroleum, who specialise in marine bunkering, have opened offices in Greece, Singapore, Dubai, Shanghai, Montevideo and Tonsberg in the last decade. According to Brian Messina of Peninsula Petroleum, yachts are using global fuel suppliers as its simpler for captains that already have enough on their plate, they cannot be expected to know all suppliers in many different ports, procedures on taxes, if they can take the duty free or duty paid fuel and so on.

Other global fuel companies include London-based Yacht Fuel Services, who claim to have arranged the supply of more than 500 million litres of fuel to superyachts in more than 2,000 ports and 48 countries worldwide. Florida-based company Global Yacht Fuel claim to have a worldwide network of suppliers in both remote and highly travelled areas.

However, yacht agents and other yacht service companies, still do receive fuel requests from superyachts as Ariane continued, “That being said, we can still provide captains with high quality fuel on the island and competitive duty-free can soon be delivered to all yachts, whether they are private or commercial. Bunkers are delivered easily by truck; I supervise the process from A to Z, ensuring everything goes smoothly and on time.”
