Three killed after mast of charter yacht snaps

Three German tourists were killed on August 21 in Harlingen, Netherlands, when the mast of a sailing yacht snapped.

According to reports, the ketch sailing yacht was 24.3m Amicitia and had been hired by the German family. The yacht was being skippered by her owner and according to the Dutch broadcaster NOS, a total of 14 people were on board the yacht when the forward mast snapped, crushing three.

The 51-year-old owner-skipper was arrested on 21 August, before being released after questioning. A police spokesperson commented, “There is something wrong on his ship and as captain, he has the responsibility.”

Video footage shows the top of the wooden mast having been snapped off, and is able to be seen quite a distance from the port.

According to reports from DutchNews.nl, it is not yet clear exactly what happened, but the Dutch Safety Board has now begun an investigation.
