Van der Valk issues construction update on 28m explorer yacht

Dutch boatbuilder Van der Valk has announced that the hull and superstructure have been joined on its third compact explorer yacht, which is scheduled to be launched in 2020 for a repeat client.

The all-aluminium design, which spans 28.5 metres (94 feet), was developed in close collaboration with Guido de Groot Design, Diana Yacht Design and Ginton Naval Architects. It follows on from the 25-metre (82-foot) Dutch Falcon and the 37-metre (121-foot) Santa Maria T.

According to the yard’s marketing manager Yoeri Bijker, the client is upgrading after just one season with his current Van der Valk boat.

“Around half of all our current orders are being built for repeat clients,” he said. “The fact that this particular client has now ordered an explorer was not a great surprise for us as we knew he was planning to embark on some impressive trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific voyages.”

Among the yacht’s key features is a sundeck entirely dedicated to leisure, with no flybridge helm station to get in the way of al fresco entertainment. Guests will be able to unwind around a large dining table to port or on the compact L-shaped settee whilst enjoying a drink from the nearby bar area.

The main deck aft will be equipped with a removable hardtop awning and whirlpool tub flanked by sunpads. With versatility a careful consideration in the design, this area can be easily converted to store a Jet Ski and an abundance of water toys, which will be launched via a davit crane that offers a maximum lifting capacity of 800kg.

Accommodation on board is for up to 10 guests split across five staterooms, including a main-deck owner’s suite, two VIP doubles and two twin cabins. The aft crew quarters allows for a staff of up to four people.

Power comes from a pair of 1,650hp MAN V12 diesel engines for a top speed of 20 knots and comfortable cruising at 17 knots. The total fuel capacity of 22,000 litres should ensure a globetrotting cruising range.
