The London Boat Show held its inaugural Apprenticeship Tuesday, in order to encourage future generations to recognise the diversity and growth in the marine industry.
Welcoming marine apprentices and students from across the industry, apprentices were given a tour of the show, which is currently underway at ExCeL London, and were introduced to the variety of roles available, from marine engineering to rigging and carpentry.
Apprentices were also able to visit some of the leading British brands within the industry which are supporting new talent, including Garmin, Sunseeker International, Raymarine and Land Rover BAR.
British Marine said in a statement that it has been ‘working with its members to support marine apprentices for a number of years, to ensure that the industry, which brings £2.97 billion turnover to the UK economy, continues to thrive.’
The brand also revealed that it has been working alongside the government and an industry-working group to develop a Trailblazer apprenticeship scheme in boat building. According to recent research from British Marine, over 200 apprenticeships start each year across more than 73 companies, and this number is set to rise as a growing number of companies sign up to schemes such as the Shipwrights’ Apprenticeship Scheme.
Amanda Simpson, training manager at British Marine commented, “Our objective is to inspire and inform both our member companies and future generations, in turn making businesses aware of the benefits of taking on and developing apprentices within their core workforce and engaging students with exciting and interesting careers in the industry.”
