Ocean Village Marina and Boatshed Gibraltar have presented a record sum of charity money to the Gibraltar Red Cross, following the success of the Ocean Village/Boatshed Gibraltar Morocco Yacht Rally this July.
Held on the weekend of the 8th July 2016, the 16th annual Yacht Rally saw a record 48 yachts take part, raising a total of £10,592.33 and easily beating last year’s record of almost £7,000.
As last year, HMS Scimitar of the Gibraltar Squadron accompanied participating yachts on the journey from Ocean Village Marina in Gibraltar to Marina Smir in Morocco, providing search and rescue cover for the yachts. Her services were thankfully not needed, but the British warship made for an unusual sight in Moroccan waters.
Representatives from Ocean Village and Boatshed Gibraltar presented Mrs Lorraine Davis with a cheque for the funds for the Red Cross, exceeding that of the organisers’ target. The total amount was announced at the after party held at the Waterfront at Queensway Quay Marina on the evening of 21st July.
Organiser John Alcantara from Boatshed Gibraltar expressed his thanks to Ocean Village and the many other sponsors who he said have “transformed this annual event into a high point in the Gibraltar yachting calendar”.
